Donor Recognition – Pro-action Not Re-action:

Recognition is the fastest changing Pillar in Donor Relations because the model for action and provision has evolved.

Fundraisers have come to realize that a well-developed Recognition Program – policy, donor agreements and signage standards, is an extremely beneficial Stewardship tool, whether in active campaign mode or not.  Developing a Recognition Program should be a part of the strategic plan and not a reaction to the conclusion of a campaign. Having a program in place means you are prepared even before you launch a Campaign or want to recognize lifetime giving and major gifts. It also ensures that your organization is not involved endless debate on how to recognize or plagued with an unsightly mishmash of signage that you may have to audit and remove after a few years. It ensures consistency in recognition offerings on an ongoing basis.

The great fundraising consultant and author, Penelope Burke has stated,” To be donor-centered in your fundraising means delivering on a “list of actions whenever a donor gives, and doing so in ways that transmit a not-for-profit’s gratitude and respect” with EVERY GIFT.  Recognition is more than just a Thank you. Most donors want public and private recognition in ways that offer them, and their families, businesses and  organizations, both salutation and legacy. It’s not always that they want to see their name displayed, but more, that others see it, and understand their contribution and reasons for giving.  With a Recognition Program already in place, Fundraisers can concentrate of the task at hand, raising dollars, and not have to worry about the WHEN, WHY and HOW to recognize gifts.  It is also much easier to Steward an “ASK” to be prepared when a donor wants to know what their recognition will look like and be able to provide this visual reference. Citing a true case example. In the early stages of a campaign, Donor A was prepared to make a $1M+ dollar gift and the Foundation provided a visual of sign in place for this gift. Not only did the donor agree to that gift but asked what could be done for and additional gift of significantly more money.

Even in the event of a Major Capital Campaign when a new facility is being constructed, having your Recognition Program in place and being able to provide donors with visuals of space yet to come, through illustrative insitu creations, changes the dynamic of the conversation making it one of imagination, excitement and engagement. The donor becomes a real part of the program from onset to conclusion.

At BAS, we create inspiring donor recognition programs. We can help you make recognition a part of your strategic plan and a major support in your ongoing donor relations and sustainable fund development.
